Frequently asked questions

Where is my data stored?

In a folder you choose, stored as plain Markdown, YAML, and WebP image files. That folder can be local to the device, in iCloud Drive, or in another service you already use such as Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box or Nextcloud. Receipts OnHand never uploads your data to us; there is no account, and no server of ours ever receives it. You can open the folder any time in the Files app, Finder, or Obsidian.

Why does the app download ~1.5 GB on first launch?

That’s the on-device AI model that reads your receipts. It downloads once. After that, all parsing happens on your device; your receipts never leave it. We recommend doing the download on Wi-Fi. The model is an open-source one, and it normally comes from a third-party host rather than from us. If that host is unreachable the app falls back to a mirror we run, so a first launch still works when someone else’s service is down.

Does it use Apple Intelligence?

No. The app downloads its own open-source model and reads receipts with that. Nothing about it depends on Apple’s roadmap, so what it does today it will still do after the next OS release.

How accurate is the receipt scanning?

The AI extracts merchant, amount, date, and similar fields, but it isn’t perfect. Always review the extracted details before relying on them for taxes or accounting. Every receipt goes through a review step where you can correct any field.

What file types can I add, and how?

Images and PDFs. On iPhone and iPad: the camera in batches, the photo library, the share sheet from any app, PDF import, Shortcuts, Siri and Spotlight. On the Mac you can also print a receipt straight into the app from any browser, drop files on the Dock icon or the window, use the Finder Services menu, or point the app at a watched folder and let it sweep. A password-protected PDF is refused rather than guessed at; save an unlocked copy and add that.

Can I add an expense that has no receipt?

Yes. Use the No receipt button, which sits beside the camera button on iPhone and iPad and in the Review toolbar on the Mac (File ▸ Add Without a Receipt, ⇧⌘N). You get a blank entry to fill in yourself. Typing an expense in is never part of the purchase and has no limit, so it keeps working after the trial ends.

Is my financial data private?

Yes. Parsing is fully on-device and there is no account or analytics. See our Privacy Policy.

Can I use my data on my Mac and in Obsidian too?

Yes. Because your data is plain files in a folder, the macOS app reads the same folder, and the records render natively in Obsidian (we provide a starter set of Obsidian “Bases” views). One device editing at a time is still the happy path, but nothing is silently lost if that slips: if two devices edit the same receipt while offline, the app spots the conflict once the files sync and walks you through it, so you can keep one version, keep the other, or merge them field by field.

What costs money?

The app is free to download and everything in it is unlocked for fourteen days. After that, one thing stops: the app reading a receipt for you. That is the camera, the share sheet, importing and dropping files, printing into the app, the watched folder, Shortcuts and Services. One purchase unlocks it permanently, covering iPhone, iPad and Mac together, with Family Sharing. It is not a subscription, and the price is shown on the App Store and under Settings ▸ Purchase in the app. Reading a receipt also needs the one-time model download described above, which comes from a host we do not control.

Everything else keeps working forever, on every platform and whether you buy or not: browse, search, every filter, all of the reports, CSV export including the image bundle, editing and archiving the receipts you already have, as many separate data sets as you like, and typing an expense in by hand. There is no receipt limit and no account.

How does the fourteen-day trial work?

Everything is unlocked for fourteen days from the first time you run the app. Each device counts its own fourteen days, so trying the Mac app later does not cost you days you spent on the iPhone. There is no card, no account and no sign-up, it is not a subscription, and nothing is charged when it ends. When it does end, nothing is hidden and nothing is deleted. Receipts you print, drop in, or leave in a watched folder after that are not rejected: they stay where you put them, the app tells you how many are waiting, and they are read as soon as you buy and the model is installed. Nothing has to be imported twice.

Will I have to buy it again later?

Not for this version. A future major version may be its own purchase; if we offer one we intend to price it as an upgrade for people who already own this one, so far as the App Store allows us to at the time. Buying it is optional either way: if you skip it you keep every feature you have today. We will not remove a feature you paid for, and we will not move one behind a further payment.

Which version of the terms applies to me?

The one in effect when the version of the app you have installed was released. You can see which version you have under Settings ▸ About. Installing an update accepts the terms in effect at that point, and if you would rather not, you can stay on the build you have. Changes are never retroactive, and no change will take away a feature you have already paid for. The full text is in the Terms of Use.

I bought the app and it isn’t showing up

Open Settings and use Restore Purchases, on either platform. Restoring needs the same Apple Account that made the original purchase. We keep no record of who bought what, so that account is the only proof of purchase there is, and it is why reinstalling the app does not lose your unlock. If Restore does not find it, check that the device is signed in to the right Apple Account first, then write to us.

Can I get a refund?

Apple handles refunds, not us. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple takes the payment and issues the receipt, so we cannot look up your order or refund a charge. Writing to us first only sends you back to Apple, so please start there.

How do I delete my data?

Delete the storage folder (and the app). There’s nothing on our servers to remove. Note that deleting the app also clears its local settings, including the record that it was unlocked; Restore Purchases brings that back.

Do you back up my receipts?

No, and we cannot. Your folder is yours: we do not host it, sync it, or hold a copy, which is the same reason we never see your data. So we cannot restore a folder you deleted or recover a file a cloud service lost. Whatever you already use to back up that device or that cloud folder is what protects your receipts, and it is worth checking that something does.
